The Schottenhamel is one of the oldest and most important of all the Oktoberfest beer tents. It all began in 1867, It was just a small beer-selling booth with just 50 seats. Now it is the leader of Oktoberfest and the tent that screams to everyone, “Calm down! It’s time, You can drink now!” Yes the party starts here!! It’s here in the Schottenhamel tent the opening ceremony of Oktoberfest begins and the Lord Mayor of Munich taps the first Oktoberfest keg of the year and shouts, “O’zapft is!”and here goes the two-week beer flow. This tent is all about having fun with your mates and some of the best roasted half-chickens in Munich and obviously the best beer.
The Schottenhamel tent, named after its founder Michael Schottenhamel, holds a special place in Oktoberfest history. In 1896, Michael set up the first 8,000-seat beer tent, and the family has continued the tradition ever since. His son, also named Michael, invited the mayor to tap the keg, starting a tradition that continues today. Now, the tent is run by Christian and another Michael Schottenhamel.
Though it’s the oldest and most traditional tent, the Schottenhamel is especially popular with a younger crowd, taking advantage of Germany’s legal drinking age of 16. The tent offers Spaten festbier and traditional Bavarian dishes, including some of the best half chickens on the Wiesn. The music is provided by Oktoberfest’s oldest musical ensemble, ensuring a lively and memorable experience. You will have a fantastic time there!
